How the transliteration works
Each Ukrainian letter is replaced by a Latin equivalent. Some letters give combinations: ж → zh, х → kh, ц → ts, ч → ch, ш → sh, щ → shch. The soft sign and the apostrophe are omitted, and the combination «зг» is written as «zgh».
The letters є, ї, й, ю, я at the start of a word become ye, yi, y, yu, ya, and in other positions ie, i, i, iu, ia. Examples: Юлія → Yuliia, Євген → Yevhen, Зінаїда → Zinaida, Згурський → Zghurskyi.
The result is for reference. For official documents, check the spelling against your official records.

Which rules does the tool follow?
The system approved by Resolution No. 55 of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine of 27 January 2010, “On regulating the transliteration of the Ukrainian alphabet into Latin script”.
Why does “Юлія” become “Yuliia” and not “Yulia”?
Under these rules the letter я in the middle or at the end of a word is written ia, not a, so Юлія is Yuliia and Марія is Mariia.
Can I enter Russian text?
The tool is built for the Ukrainian alphabet. The Russian letters ы, э, ё are handled approximately and ъ is omitted. For documents, use the Ukrainian spelling of the name.
