How VAT is calculated

VAT (value added tax) is charged on the base value of goods or services. Ukraine applies a 20% standard rate, two reduced rates (7% and 14%), and a 0% rate for certain transactions. Check current rules before a tax calculation.

Add: VAT = Amount × Rate ÷ 100. Extract: VAT = Amount − Amount ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)

To extract VAT from an amount that already includes tax, divide it by (1 + rate). For example, from 120 UAH at 20%, VAT is 20 UAH and the net amount is 100 UAH.

VAT calculation examples

Example 1 — add VAT. Price before tax is 1,000 UAH, rate 20%. VAT = 1,000 × 20 ÷ 100 = 200 UAH, total to pay — 1,200 UAH.

Example 2 — extract VAT from a total. An invoice for 1,200 UAH already includes 20% VAT. Net amount = 1,200 ÷ 1.2 = 1,000 UAH, VAT = 1,200 − 1,000 = 200 UAH.

Example 3 — 7% rate. A receipt for 535 UAH includes 7% VAT. Net amount = 535 ÷ 1.07 = 500 UAH, VAT = 35 UAH. Check the Tax Code to see whether the reduced rate applies to your goods.

FAQ about VAT

Which VAT rates can I use in the calculator?

The calculator provides 20%, 7%, 14%, and 0% rates for examples. Laws and tax rules can change, so check current official sources before a tax calculation.

Who must register as a VAT payer?

Mandatory VAT registration applies once the volume of taxable transactions over the last 12 months exceeds the threshold set by the Tax Code of Ukraine. The threshold and rules can be changed by legislators, so check current conditions on the State Tax Service website. You can also register voluntarily — this gives the right to a tax credit.

Can I extract VAT from any amount?

Yes, if you know the amount includes tax at a known rate. The calculator will immediately show the net amount and the tax amount separately.

How can I quickly extract 20% VAT from a VAT-inclusive amount?

Divide the amount by 6: VAT is 20/120, one sixth of the VAT-inclusive total (about 16.67%). From 1,200 UAH that is 200 UAH. For the 7% rate the share is 7/107 (about 6.54%), for 14% it is 14/114 (about 12.28%).

What is the mandatory VAT registration threshold in 2026?

In 2026 the threshold is 1 million UAH of taxable supplies over the previous 12 months (Article 181 of the Tax Code of Ukraine). For sole proprietors (FOP) on the single tax, this mandatory registration does not currently apply, but voluntary registration is possible. Changes are proposed from 2027, including raising the threshold to 4 million UAH and extending mandatory registration to single-tax payers, but this is a draft law, not a rule in force. Check the current status on the State Tax Service website.

How is the 0% rate different from operations “without VAT”?

The 0% rate applies to operations that are subject to VAT (for example, exports of goods), so the payer keeps the right to a tax credit. Exempt operations are made “without VAT” and do not give that right. See the Tax Code for the exact lists.
